The River Peoples Cultural Exchange is a collaborative effort of the residents of Lyle, Washington, and Tribal Members to share traditions, educate, build friendships, and promote goodwill with our communities and region.

River Peoples Cultural Exchange exists to promote accurate history of the Columbia River People area by sharing Native American traditions and culture.  While the spotlight might be on a single-day annual event, which is how it began, quickly it evolved into a unified, collaborative ongoing effort to educate, promote, preserve and share.  In other words, this is an ongoing, year-around cultural event, featuring an annual public celebration.

Eagle Spirit Drummers

This year's River Peoples Cultural Exchange honors and celebrates youth -- their contribution to society, the challenges they face in our complex world, and activities and programs that support them as they grow to be
future community leaders of Lyle and the world.

A ceremonial dinner will include traditional roots, water, and huckleberries, as well as non-traditional bean and corn salad and baked potatoes with the trimmings.  Ceremonial dinners are gifted in gratitude by organizers “for the abundance given by the Creator.” Donations are welcomed to support the generous meal, which will be served beginning at 4:30 P.M.  All throughout the day, vendors will sell fry bread and baked pies and cookies. Fresh sandwiches, vegetables and fruit as well, as water and soda will also be available.

Mission Statement: The River Peoples Cultural Exchange will present a balanced and accurate view of the Native American River Peoples' arts, culture, and historic and contemporary life challenges.  For centuries, a strong Native American community with an economy based on fishing, hunting, gathering and trading has thrived in the area of Lyle, Washington, sustained by the area's abundant resources and unique geography.  Promoting a broader understanding in the larger community fosters new friendships and genuine goodwill among all peoples of the Mid-Columbia River Gorge.
