Celebrating Youth

At this year’s event, we pay tribute to our youth.

Day of event youth leadership projects:

Film Crew

A youth focused internship film crew will begin working on a documentary of the River People designed to highlight major cultural traditions and contemporary issues.

Youth Project/Demonstration Stations

Youth will set up hands-on, collaborative learning opportunities that will include: traditional arts & crafts(beading necklaces and chokers, creating dream weavers, erecting tipis, and teaching traditional Native games).

Youth Leadership Building

Youth are assigned leadership roles; such as working the information both, offering water and refreshments to elders, share security watch in building, leading demonstration stations, preparing salmon bake, serving food, presiding over Listening to the Elders in Tipis, documenting oral history, and fundraising event.

River Peoples Cultural Exchange exists to promote accurate history of the Columbia River People area by sharing Native American traditions and culture.  While the spotlight might be on a single-day annual event, which is how it began, quickly it evolved into a unified, collaborative ongoing effort to educate, promote, preserve and share.  In other words, this is an ongoing, year-around cultural event, featuring an annual public celebration.

This year's River Peoples Cultural Exchange honors youth -- their contribution to society, the challenges they face in our complex world, and activities and programs that support them as they grow to be
future community leaders of Lyle and the world.
